So I rode the dump/hidden springs loop this sunday on my fixed. It wasnt a long ride per se, but it was probably the most hilly ride I have done thus far on a fixed gear. I flipflopped back and forth between 66 and 74 gear inches and it was rideable, but not easy. I didn't keep track of time, but Im guessing it only took 15 minutes longer than on my geared bike. I did stop and stretch my legs a lot though... Riding down was not so great. I suck at riding downhill. My skidding muscles are sore for the first time since i was learning to skid. My little 'cross lever and front brake weren't doing much...
Anyways, it sucked, but it was way fun. Im planning on doing it again this Saturday morning if anybody wants to join in. Let me know and we can nail down a start time and place. (ie: meet 10:00 am at Java in Hyde Park...)
I did this ride on my fuji with no brakes (80 inches at the time, I think). Going down the motorcycle hill was TERRIFYING! I was skidding almost the entire way down. I highly recommend a brake.
I'll be at Elkhorn this WE (getting my ass kicked), but have a good ride.
Wow. 80 gi and brakeless? You, sir, are a beast. I second your sentiments about the motorcycle hill. I should have unclipped my feet and let gravity work...
I'm excited to take it on again though, and company will make the suffering sufferable!
