it passed the house i believe.. it will also have to pass the senate and then be signed by the governor.. if I remember highschool gov class correctly.. and then, it probably still wont go into effect until a later date.. like next july or something.

haha i'm currently in high school government, tomorrow i'll bring in some information regarding this bill and i'm sure my gov teacher will love that someone actually gives a shit about bills (other than the no texting bill.)

based on the facts that this bill was passed through the house fairly easy, i see little chance of it not being passed by senate. :(
but im planning on making some elliot werk shirts, probably something my mother will frown at when i wear it

I highly doubt a single person in idaho government has ever been on a brakeless fixed gear, yet they all know exactly how dangerous they must be.. pretty rad.

Elliot Werk thinks he is some kind of authority on bicycle commuting and everyone else should ride how he tells them to ride. He's one of those guys who thinks everyone should ride with a mirror because he rides with a mirror. He also panders to the middle age folks who drive SUVs to work everyday but think their green because they own a $5,000 bike they ride 3 times a week. These same people bitch about fix geared bicycles even though they've never ridden one and know jack shit about it. Except that kids do it, and let's face it, these people have no control over us, but they really want to control us. So, they bitch to Elliot, he sucks their dick and they vote him back in and give him money. All the while simultaneously feeding Werk's ego with the image that he represents how every cyclist should be.

I attended some bicycle summit thing last summer where they discussed all the things being pushed through the legislator this year. Elliot was there and Elliot was a douche bag. But I'd except nothing less from a politician.

BTW, Kristen Armstrong was there too. She kicked ass, said all the right things and was a great representative of the riding community. She spoke after Elliot and contradicted many things he said. He was sitting right next to her and started to(the best way I know how to describe this behavior) stare her down in a weird way. It appeared to me he was trying to intimidate her because she was essentially saying he was wrong. She did not flinch, stall or seem to be in any way affected by his shitty behavior. I wish people would have taken action on what she had to say. But alas, we have Elliot instead.

    Triton looks great, as always.
I like how most of the comments for the article are positive. In favor of the riders.

What really bugs me is how none of the new laws makes anyone safer. New laws are not going to bring down the bicycle accident rate. The problem is deep and cultural. Education, communication and camaraderie is the way to make cyclists safer and motorists less pissed off. This is something Kristen Armstrong was able to explain at the summit. She explained how different it is in Europe and how they don't have the same issues and confrontations that we do here. She summed it up well with: "In Europe kids grow up on a bike, in the U.S kids grow up with a ball in their hands". I believe most motorists are upset with cyclists because they 'Don't get it'. It's difficult for them to empathize with the cyclists because they have never ridden a proper bike as an adult. They view bikes as toys that have no place in their life and discount riders as such.

The one thing that has made the biggest difference over that last 12 months is the media coverage. This would fall under the 'education' point. In North Boise drivers have changed. They are much more aware of cyclists than before. To aware actually. They give us the right of way when they shouldn't. Drivers have started to over compensate, and actually get in the way. I believe much of this is in reaction to the media coverage of bicycle deaths and related issues over the past year or so. Laws aren't going to have that kind of affect.

If I only owned a TV station...

the bummer thing about so many of the people on that idaho statesman comment thread is that when someone says OMG A BIKE WIT NO BRAKES!?
it seems they think of it like a bike with no brakes and a free wheel set up
    like no way of stopping
plus i doubt any of them actually ride their bike more than once a week.

the funny thing is that if i am required to have a brake on my bike i will probably ride like 10x more reckless knowing i can stop myself a lot quicker

I ride like a maniac because I know my helmet will save me. Add brakes to that and you better clear the roads when you see me coming.

The ironic thing is, as far as I can tell, even if this bill passes, there will be no fine for breaking this law. So I personally cannot wait to get my first ticket for riding "brakeless" so I can make a spoke card out of the ticket.

I also want to point out the biggest issue: That fixed gears are by definition not brakeless. All these morons commenting on the statesman and that genius werk don't seem to have a clue how the physics of a "fixie" actually work. THERE IS NO FREEWHEEL, NO COASTING, NO OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!! All these morons think that we just run into things to stop. I personally can stop just as fast as a roadie with two brakes from the same speed. Granted, I have had over 10 years of experience on fixed gears, and I would recommend that any newbie should run a front brake until they learn how to skid properly. But what are we going to do, start licensing fixed gear riders and make them pass a "skid exam"? Frankly, I think all of this is the most obscene waste of taxpayer dollars and legislators' time Idaho has ever committed to.

    Fuck the douche bags.
  4.   0 points
i will agree to "fuck the douche bags" but there are people on "fixies" that are out of control. we have all seen them and we all know the ones that refuse to ride hills because the simply cannot stop their bikes. 10 years experience is quite impressive but i know for a positive fact that you cannot stop as fast as i can on my road bike. i know this for a fact. i also know that you cannot reach as high of speeds as i can on my road bike when descending any of the hills in the north end. i am not arguing as to weather this should be a law or not, because to me it shouldn't. but this isn't something to flex your 10 year old fixed gear riding dick over either. if politicians want to make a law that will have a positive affect on the cycling community then we need a helmet law. i hate to break it to anyone fixed gear ridere out there but you look alot less cool wearing a helmet than you do by putting a front brake on your bicycle, and no one that actually considers themselves a cyclists can say that a helmet does more harm than good.

It's all risk assessment. We endanger ourselves by riding bikes, walking in the park, and even by not doing anything at all. Every person must decide how much risk they want to take on in every aspect of their daily lives. The criteria for this can range dramatically; A stunt man can reasonably walk his dog without wearing a helmet, while the retarded kid who keeps falling and hitting his head will probably need to wear a helmet to enjoy the same level of safety.

I sometimes wear a helmet, I sometimes buckle my seat belt, sometimes I wear gloves when working with sharp objects, sometimes I ride a bike with hand breaks on it. Now unless I'm gong to somehow violate the civil liberties of a 3rd party in any of these cases, it is my life to choose the level of insurance required. I may decide to wear full body armour and hide in a padded room some days, or perhaps I really need a rush of adrenaline and want to go sky diving while smoking crack and having unprotected sex with a Russian hooker.

In some ways this topic reminds me of Lysander Spooner's paper: Vices are not Crimes. It's public domain and a good read... http://www.lysanderspooner.org/VicesAreNotCrimes.htm

Unbelievable: The two laws that may make a difference, "one requiring cars to give cyclists three feet when passing, the other to punish people who harass cyclists", are left to die in the Senate. The trucking industry didn't like it.

But, guess which one is still in play?
"So far, only one of Werk's bicycle-related measures has cleared the Senate. It would require brakes on all bikes."

A great reader comment from the statesmen:
"We should also examine the possibility of making some roads off-limits to cyclists (i.e.: Harrison Blvd)"

I like that comment in particular because I love riding down Harrison Blvd, as fast as I can.

"Perhaps licensing and training courses should be manditory for cycilists. I still see touring clubs riding 3 abreast on south Cole road"

haha, yeah because people drive like assholes and bicyclists are left to ride defensively, yet the person in the car always complains. right on

I like how drivers act like it's some kind of huge inconvenience.
"Oh shit, I had to think about an obstacle in the road. I think it slowed me down a bit, now I'm 5 seconds late!"
Why aren't they all up in arms over slow cars? They are much harder to pass.
    It's such a bad mindset.

    Fucking relax.
Actually, that's one of the biggest reasons I stopped owning a car. The fucking stress of it. Driving around town all the time sucks. It gets you all worked up over trivial bullshit. If you step back listen to what drivers bitch about it's 99.9% meaningless bullshit. But when your in a car bubble it's like the sky is falling.
